ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENTS & WDD!

HI ALL! :)
West Division Day is over, and it was super beneficial and awesome :D
We've have managed to get first & second for Wide Games & Tent Pitching competitions respectively! :D
There were other activities such as pioneering, that was super informative as well, we will definitely consider having pioneering courses or trainings for your! ^^

When we knew we were going to get second in place for the Tent Pitching competition, we were extremely happy as the tents in the competition is totally different from the ones in our school, the ones they used were canvas tents.
Among those that helped, only 4 or so people had learnt and practiced pitching the canvas tents before, but only for two times. Most of them were clueless, but they were very helpful as they listened to our instructions and did everything well. Hence, we were very grateful for the prize and hope to pass down the skills to your! :D

Of course, there are still many rooms for improvements :)

THIS APPLIES TO WHOLE COMPANY AS WELL.

Here are some:
1) Sense of urgency.
Do not take your time to do things, when travelling from one place to another, always stay together and walk briskly, do not lag behind or walk slowly. This is to ensure no one gets lost and also speed things up. When asked to take, find or carry things, do not take your own sweet time, quickly do all the required stuffs.

2) Team Spirit
Always try to communicate and get to know one another better, don’t always stick in your own circle of friends or keep quiet. Whenever our group is together, always try to sit in a circle so that everyone can talk to everybody and no one will be left out. Don’t sit in your own circles, nor sit far away from others.

3) Take initiatives
Whenever asked for volunteers to help do / take things, there is often no one willing to take initiatives. This will not only slow things down, but also shows that we rely too much on one another. If you do not know what to do, you still can take initiative to help and find out more. We want you guys to take initiative as we do not want to force anyone or pinpoint anyone to do certain stuffs.

4) Misc
Whenever we bring our own stuffs to other places, even from our guides room to, for example, school foyer, or from our school to camp christine, please always ensure that we have it by our sides, unless instructed to leave it somewhere. We do not wish for things to be left behind, and always asking people to go back and take it. Be responsible and help to hold or take it whenever needed.
WDD PEOPLE: One example would be the bag of newspapers today, some of your were sitting around it before we went to olave hall, yet no one bothered to take it or ask if it’s our (if you didnt know) when we left. Many of us were holding the different things we brought there, such as the First Aid kit and the mallets, so the rest can help to take the bag and other stuffs. Take turns so that no one would have to carry it the whole while if it’s heavy.

We hope you guys can take note of the stuffs above , :) we must always accept change and become more efficient and responsible, both individually and as a whole company together, as we still have many more trophies to win! :D

THE BABIES! HAHA.

CLOSE UPS :) IF ONLY WE CAN COVER THE "RUNNER UP" PART. xD

AND THE CHAMPION TROPHY! :D

Just a note:
Also, sometimes we ask you guys to bring stuffs that we ended up not using, this applies to both WDD today and normal CCA. We are aware, but we did not do it on purpose of course, sometimes, we were told by the teachers or other leaders that it is required, or thought we needed it, but if we do not use it, please do not keep complaining or whining, as if we do not use them, it either means we have a change in plan / agenda, not sure why it is in the "pack list" but not needed, or it is not used for that day which we thought it might be.
We hope to minimise such stuffs from happening, but if it does, we hope your can understand! :)

Kkays, dont be too overwhelmed by all the stuffs mentioned above, just take note and improve accordingly. ^^ The trophies are in the guides room, your can go check it out, and more details for upcoming CCA will be out soon. :D

PS: Do remember to check the guides blog regularly for information and also read and familiarise yourselves with the rules on the guides blog carefully so that you know and not repeat the same mistakes. Punishments apply to everyone! (including the excos) :P

A 1st-time experience

On 31st May, 8 Sec 2 Guides went for outdoor cooking training at NYGH.
Take a look at what they had experienced!

Marking out turf

Materials used to set up a fire

Digging out loose soil

Starting of fire!

Fire burning bright!

Cooking of food

Cooked food!

Personal reflections from each of them:

Rachel
My first impression upon reaching there was... rushed, cause I got lost. Really, really lost, i couldn't find the gate. So, when i first arrived, the group was already digging the fire pit. I got the chance to hack at the ground and pull it out. I can tell the soil was healthy from all the earthworms i saw. They got these whole pile of flammable organic stuff laid out, and we arranged the sticks and twigs to make the 'lazy mens(or something like that)' way of starting a fire. Then, we got a chance to strike a match! Well, only me and Shu Ting took the chance, for some reason the others were all afraid of fire. It took a few matches, but finally got started. I guess i get kind of over excited with all this fire stuff, because soon enough, i started roasting leaves, which they said was dangerous... but i lived to roast marshmellows afterwards. There was cooking from the embers of the dead fire, and the consumption of delicious pizza bread and semi-raw potato after that. From this event I learnt a lot from how to start a fire safely to teamwork to the things that Mrs Loh explained during a long speech about the Girl Guides of NYGH having respect amoung themselves and others, and how we should learn from them. I really hope we all can experience something like this again sometime in the near future.

Xiu Qin
I enjoy this outdoor cooking session with NYGH guides a lot, because firstly, i have learnt to use another method to prepare my food. Secondly, this session has help us to bond together even more, and thirdly, learn how to use simple ingredients like white bread to make a pizza.
I hope to bring this new knowledge to the other guides so as to make them gain new experience of outdoor cooking!

Wen Ting
I feel that the activity is fun and we should carry out during our own CCA as it is very interesting and in the modern days, seldom people will use twigs and dried leaves to start a fire and cook our own food. Moreover, the taste of the food is very different and it gives me a sense of satisfactory. Also, i learnt how to choose the materials for the fire and patience is also needed. This outdoor cooking is a rare and unforgettable experience for me as i have never did it before. I hope more people will experience the hardship of people in the olden days when they don't even have a proper kitchen and stoves.

Shu Ting
This training is both fun and enjoyable as we learnt many stuffs like how to set up and make a fire ,do and do nots when we make a fire etc...it was fun!:)The hardest part was turfing...(which means driving the changkul deep into the ground and aiming properly...) ,which i cannot aim well... i think that...the best part of the whole training was when we ate our food we cooked, there was a great sense of accomplishment, which made us all very proud of ourselves:DD
Although it was rather tiring, i felt that it was a wonderful experience. We should also do outdoor cooking like this during camp!!!! It would be funn:)

Felicia
Through this training , i have learnt how to do outdoor cooking in other ways other than using solid fuel. This process is much like 'barbequing' , and i was amazed at how they rekindle the fire. I have learnt how to dig a hole out and know the importance of the sizes of the twigs. Different things such as coconut husk that could be found in the nature catches fire very easily and thus, it is normally used in the starting of fire. Nanyang Guides were really helpful and friendly. They attended to our needs and answered our questions patiently. They even allowed us to have our hands on and even guided us through. We definitely should learn from them. Their compassion, smiles have made us feel part of them.

Elicia
I have learnt how to prepare food neatly and different cutting skills. There are chopping, slicing. I felt that we should have more outdoor cooking sessions in school camps or during cca times. So that our juniors can learn more things about Outdoor Cooking.

Ye Qi
The outdoor cooking at NYGH was very fruitful and i learnt a lot of things like how to classify the twigs into different categories, turf a pit, set up a lazy man structure using twigs and punks, start the fire, keep the fire going, safety precautions to take while starting the fire and many more. Although the smoke got into my eyes, it was a very fun experience. The food is also tastier as it is cooked using our own efforts.

Gloria
I had a whale of time learning how to do outdoor cooking (Ember cooking). I learnt how to turf a pit by first marking out the size of the pit using a changkul and then changkuling deep into the marked areas accurately, where the turf will be later lifted out. We then laid twigs and punks into the pit and started the fire. I also learnt about some safety precautions and how to keep the fire going. The Nanyang guides were also very nice to us, patiently teaching us and providing more information on outdoor cooking. It was a great experience and I hope that our next camp will have ember cooking as one of its activities.

OUR BELOVED GUIDES ROOM~

Heys!! Let us tell u the story of our guides room~ haha..

longlongtimeago..(last week), mrs cheah, mdm toh, mr kong, OM and mr vilau wanted to take away our guides room so that the wall can hack down and band can put instruments..(they no space)...And we were supposed to move away today, to the PE STORE (not office-.-).. isn't that like HORRIBLE?! there got no windows, no air, only dust and spiders..

THANKFULLY ur dear sec 3 seniors knew they were coming to see our room, so we wrote a appeal msg to mrs cheah etc..OMG right..we said ' please dont take away our room, cos its our second home, alot memories, we luv it blahblah..' then it was so TOUCHING that mrs cheah decided to let us keep it :D WOOHOO~ She wrote back on the board to say that we 'are heard...' haha. YAY~ so now, its ours again.. (we havent erased it frm the board in guides room, u can go see if have time!!)

We hope after u noe what happened and how badly we tried to save u all from the dirt room, u guys will KEEP THE GUIDES ROOM CLEAN!!! Lets cherish what we have and don't take things for granted kay? :)

-love, excos (and those who came back to tidy the room on e-learning day, thks babes!) :D
