Girl Guides Expectations

Hello my fellow awesome guides :) This is a post everyone should take note and read carefully.
We have heard that many of you are unsure about many things about girl guides especially about parades, attire and etc. If any of you are unsure, it is YOUR responsibility to find out and not expect us to spoon-feed each one of you. You can get your answers from the Girl guides Singapore Website:
http://www.girlguides.org.sg/cos/o.x?c=/ggs/pagetree&func=view&rid=4595 or the Guides Handbook.

Pg 9-14 is about the basic knowledge and introduction about guides (company, patrol, etc), what you should already know. Read and memorise the taps on pg 14, the day one and the night one because we have realised that some of ya'll have not been singing the taps correctly. We will re-teach you the correct tune one day. Meanwhile, familiarise yourselves with these information.

Pg 23-24 is about the girl guides sign, salute and handshake.

Pg 26 part 2.3 is about knowing how to wear the guides uniform correctly. Many of you, especially the sec ones do not know how to wear your guides uniform. Simply refer to this page. And we will further reinforce about your attire. Your attire is what portrays your character best and if your attire is not up to standard, it will cast a bad impression not only on you but also on Girl Guides. Hence wearing the proper attire is necessary.

Hat: Your hat is called a girl guides hat (NOT a beret) so stop addressing it as a beret because it is different from other Uniform groups' beret. When you are wearing it, make sure that the left and right sides are properly ironed and they should be folded upwards. The front and back are not to be folded upwards, it should be pressed down. Iron/ Starch your hat. The sides should not be drooping downwards. When you are wearing the hat, the crest should be facing the middle.

Hair: Your hair should always be plaited from top to bottom in a french braid/ scorpion style. People with short hair are to buy a hairnet suitable for all your hair to be tucked inside completely. Fringes and flying feelers should all be clipped up neatly and only black accessories are allowed. When in your contingent, your plaits should be behind your shoulders at all times.

Accessories: All Earrings/ Ear studs/ Watches/ Handbands/ Hairbands/ Necklaces/ Other accessories - Are to be strictly removed when you are wearing the guides uniform or half uniform.

Scarf:
How to iron
1. When you iron your scarf, first flip it to the back, with the back of the crest facing you (the crest is to be underneath).
2. Measure 3 finger length above the crest and fold once. Iron it.
3. Then, without unfolding it, flip it back to the front (the crest is now facing you)
4. Fold the folded area (that is 3 finger above the crest) into half. Iron it.
5. Divide the half into 3 segments and iron it.

This may sound tedious and confusing but it is necessary to iron your scarf no matter what because a scarf that is not ironed looks extremely untidy. After you have ironed your scarf, bring it to the parade and tie it. The tying part can be taught personally. When you are wearing the scarf, your plaits or blouse SHOULD NOT cover the crest. It is an offense! The crest should be at your back, under you collar. After it has been tied, the trefoil can be put on.
Alternatively, if you do not understand, just visit the girl guides Singapore website:
http://www.girlguides.org.sg/cos/o.x?c=/ggs/pagetree&func=view&rid=5107

Blouse: Your blouse must be fully ironed. On the top of the blouse is where your rankings are sewn (for the excos, PLs and PSs) remember to sew your ranking down. The sleeves: At the top is where the CSS 1ST COY should be. Your proficiency badges (the round ones) should be sewn at your right side and with 1 finger spacing between each. Your left sleeve should be where your other badges are (eg. Civil Defence, total defence, etc). The front of your blouse should contain your world patch and centenary patch below.

Badges: You will have your trefoil (aka enrolment badge), world badge, gold/silver/bronze badge. Polish your badges with metal polish. make sure that they are shiny.

Belt: When you are wearing your uniform, do not ever forget to bring you belt! And polish the metal part of the belt.

Skirt:
ALL SKIRTS ARE TO BE KNEE-LENGTH, NOT ANY SHORTER.
ALL SKIRTS ARE TO BE KNEE-LENGTH, NOT ANY SHORTER.
ALL SKIRTS ARE TO BE KNEE-LENGTH, NOT ANY SHORTER.
If your skirt is above your knee, go and alter it straight away, make sure that when you kneel down, your skirt touches the ground. We are extremely serious. If your skirt is beyond repairation, you have no choice but to buy a new skirt OR we may have some spare skirts left behind by the seniors, you may want to ask from them.

Socks: Strictly white and LONG. If you do not have long socks that are 4 fingers above the ankle, we will just ask you to change into our spare LONG socks (in the guides room :P)

White Canvas Shoe/ Boots: Take note that the guides uniform goes with white canvas shoe and not boots, but they are meant to be worn only during parades. When asked to wear full guides uniform and white canvas shoes, the shoes are to be 110% white (NO PART SHOULD BE coloured and STRICTLY no wearing of sports shoes while wearing guides uniform). Shoelaces are to be tied parallel to each other.

Lastly, whilst wearing the uniform, be very careful as not to take off your hat and put it on the ground or let your crest on your scarf be covered. This is extremely important.

We are very strict about attire and knowledge about guides. Everyone is to visit the girl guides website: http://www.girlguides.org.sg/cos/o.x?c=/ggs/pagetree&func=view&rid=4595 and understand everything. No unnecessary doubts will be entertained and we will not spoon-feed you with so many details from now onwards. Do not question if your attire is acceptable if you know that it is not. Follow each and every rule strictly and your attire would be pleasing and perfect. For those participating in the NDP and CWSS day, take special note of your attire and the parade sequence. Please do not screw up or wear the wrong attire on the actual day. We may just get you replaced from the contingent.

Do familiarise yourselves with page 41 -46 of the Guides Handbook also as there are certain parade sequence you may need to know.

Thats all for the knowledge part, you don't have to memorise them and get stressed up, but just abide to them and everything would go smoothly. :)

Lastly, just another note. Guides, please do not take our comments and scoldings to heart, and do not get upset. Although we appear to be harsh, strict and fierce, we are just doing our best to make commonwealth girl guides a cca to be proud of. This is because we do not want you all to be humiliated and our standard to drop, but for girl guides to be a cca in which we can have fun but we still have discipline, and grow as mature ladies. Hence, i hope all of us can strive towards a common goal, and most importantly, love guides and unite as one. :)

Jiayou! ^^
